Aotearoa’s marine environments face unprecedented challenges from climate change and overfishing to habitat loss.

Despite a decade of valuable research through the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge, much of this critical knowledge remains inaccessible to those who could use it to drive change.

The challenge was to unlock this wealth of data and make it easily accessible - helping businesses, iwi, policymakers, educational institutions, and community groups improve marine management practices and policies.

Solution

Tohorā uses AI-powered natural language search to distil complex research into clear summaries and key insights. It analyses over 100 leading research papers from the past decade, making findings more digestible and actionable.

Tohorā is named after our mighty whales, having guided our ancestors across vast oceans, and now helping us find a way once more.

As an industry first, this tool marks a leap forward for research-based organisations, with many more set to adopt this way of delivering data.
