Future-proofing one of Aotearoa's most meaningful studies, evolving how researchers connect with a new, digital-first generation of participants.
Traditionally, data collection for Growing Up in New Zealand (GUiNZ) has relied on conventional research methods. Participants, both here in Aotearoa and those now living overseas, were contacted via email, phone, or post to complete surveys that could take up to an hour, sometimes supported by in-person visits.
Now, as the study enters its sixteenth year, it needs to transfer consent from parents to rangatahi, introducing the challenge of building a meaningful relationship with a new generation of participants born in a digital-first world. How can the study create an ongoing connection that reflects their digital expectations and clearly and authentically shows them the value of their voices and data?
GUiNZ needed to design a seamless, engaging, and trustworthy digital experience that could sustain long-term participation while future-proofing the study's integrity and depth.
Through a long-standing partnership with GUiNZ, Daylight worked closely with the study team to understand their evolving needs and carefully reimagine the participant experience, from first contact and consent through to data collection and reward. This process helped identify opportunities where digital tools could simplify and support engagement, while preserving the values, rigour, and trust at the heart of the study.
The result is HOME - a new digital platform designed to bring core parts of the GUiNZ participant experience together in one place. HOME provides a central hub where caregivers, rangatahi, and the study team can connect, access information, participate in research activities, and manage incentives more easily.
More than just a data portal, HOME embodies the kaupapa of GUiNZ. It represents a place of belonging, a space where young people can understand the power of their data, take ownership of their participation in the study, and see their role in making Aotearoa a better place to call home.
